Students in the Creative Writing class and an English II class at CHS are participating in a global pen pal activity. The classes send and receive letters from Japanese students in Yamagata, Japan. Central students received Christmas cards that featured seasonal artwork and cultural icons from Japan. Students make cards and write letters to send to the Japanese students, who are developing their English skills.
“It’s important to learn about other cultures, and this gives both groups of students the opportunity to directly do so,” says Tabitha Smith, a CHS senior. Students discuss differences and similarities in their cultures and lifestyles.
The Japanese students are taught by Central High graduate Tori Wedgeworth Marmon. “I’m proud that one of my former students is fulfilling her dreams of teaching in Japan,” says Ms. Pointer, the Creative Writing instructor.
The classes will continue to write to the Japanese students throughout the semester and learn more about the world.
