Exploring the "Secret City"

Chemistry and Physics students visit AMSE

The chemistry and physics students took a field trip to the American museum of science and energy on March 22, 2006.  Students from Mrs. Summers’ classes viewed some of the many exhibits offered at AMSE.  One of the newest exhibits, called “Strange Matter,” showed how space shuttles transfer fuel in a weightless environment.  Other exhibits included “Secret City” which detailed how Oak Ridge was involved with the building of the atomic bomb during World War II.

Students were also treated to the “Atom and Atom Smashers” program.   This program combined a discussion of basic atomic structure with demonstrations of static electricity.  Demonstrations of static electricity included using a small atom smasher to create a static charge that could light up a fluorescent light bulb.

After visiting the museum, students enjoyed a nice meal together at Ryan’s restaurant in Oak Ridge.
