In 1925 Hobart Schofield Cooper submitted a thesis entitled :"German and Swiss Colonization in Morgan County, Tennessee," to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The thesis was written to fufill one of the requirements for the Masters of Arts degree.
Mr. Cooper writes in the Preface of his thesis that he selected this topic after realizing the signifigance of the establishment of a German Colony in Morgan County. At the time of his research, Mr. Cooper began investigating what appeared to be a first attempt to colonize foreign immigrants in Tennessee.
Sources for this thesis were the decendants of these German immigrants, many of whom still reside in Morgan County. In addition, Mr. Cooper poured over innumerable pages of handwritten records including diaries, letters, family Bibles, and buisness records. He also conducted many personal interviews and distributed questionnaires.
"German and Swiss Colonization in Morgan County, Tennessee" is the result of "much effort [and]... much time consumed" by Mr. Cooper.
We have scanned the typewritten pages of Mr. Coopers manuscript in hopes of preserving this piece of Morgan County history for future generations. Chapters 1 through 4 and 7and 8 are in seprate files. Chapters 5 and 6 however, were much longer and were split into manageble sections.
