During the summer, Upward Bound students live on campus at Lincoln Memorial University in residence halls for approximately five weeks.  Students usually go home on Friday nights and then make the trip back to LMU every Sunday.

The students take part in four academic classes each morning:
- Math
- Science
- Foreign language
- Composition and Literature

The students choose three elective classes to take each afternoon.  Recreation and social activities are planned for each evening to give each student the opportunity to enhance his/her socialization skills.  A cultural trip is planned for the last four to five days of the program as well as short cultural excursions throughout the summer.  A stipend is paid to each student for each week attended during the summer component at the end of the program.  A career work-study is in place for students to gain experience in work ethics and careers that require a post-secondary degree.

Recently graduated students attending the summer can qualify for a bridge class. This is an actual college class that is paid for by Upward Bound. Students them may transfer this class to the college of their choice.
