The National Beta Club was founded in South Carolina in 1934. Founders of the club wanted to recognize students who exemplified the ideals of character, leadership, and achievement.

Today, there are more than 417,000 members of the Beta Club world-wide. On April 7, 1937, the Central High chapter of the National Beta Club was founded.

The motto of the National Beta Club is, "Let Us Lead By Serving Others". Service to others is one of the most important characteristics of the Central High Beta Club.

Membership qualifications vary from school to school. Students who are invited to join the Central High Beta Club must meet the following criteria:

Member must be a junior or a senior
Member must have a 3.5 GPA and :

• Cannot have a grade of a D or F on his/her transcript
• Cannot have more than 2 C's on his/her transcript
  
• Member must have and keep a Renaissance Card
  
• Member must make the Honor Roll each nine weeks after joining the club
  
• Member cannot have any disciplinary or attendance problems. The disciplinary and attendance policy are the same as the ones used for Renaissance Cards
  
• Member must have the recommendation of 2 Central High faculty members
  
• Member must maintain all the above standards after being accepted into the Beta Club

There is a one time membership fee of $25 to join the Beta Club. The National Beta Club receives $13 of that fee, and the other $12 stays with the home club. This fee is due at the first meeting. Members must also participate in all Beta activities and fund raisers.

The Central High Beta Club is sponsored by Mr. Zandy Knox.

Membership in the National Beta Club is considered an honor. Colleges and employers recognize the organization. Over $250,000 in scholarship money is awarded by the National office each year.
